Omega-3 fatty acids – you find them throughout your body and they play an important role in all ages of human health. We couldn‘t survive without them! Because the body cannot produce them itself, we have to assimilate it through food. The WHO recommends a minimum daily intake of 250 mg DHA and EPA. The right ratio of omega-3 and
omega-6 fatty acids counts

Not only the amount of omega-3 that we eat every day, but above all the right ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is important to our health – because only with the right ratio of both fatty acids, we do optimally fulfill their effect in our body. While an imbalance chargeable to omega-3 leades silent inflammation and typical lifestyle diseases, a good ratio operates anti-inflammatory, improves the flow properties of the blood, has a positive effect on blood pressure and much more.

However the industrialization of food increased the amount of omega-6 fatty acids on our daily meal plan. A rising imbalance in the intake between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids was the result. Instead of the ideal ratio of the omega-6 to omega-3 of 3:1, the actual intake of Europeans today is on average a 12:1.

Our oil concentrate with 90% triglyceride content

Fish oil concentrates are often described as inferior to unconcentrated fish oil. All that matters is that the omega-3 fatty acids are built into their natural matrix – in triglyceride form. 

For a better understanding: There are 3 different types of fish oil (concentrates).

  • Unconcentrated fish oil from triglycerides, as it occurs in fish.
  • Ethyl ester (EE) oil concentrate – contains no triglyceride.
  • Re-esterified triglyceride fish oil concentrate, which usually has 50-60% triglyceride content. Our amount of 90% is exceptionally high.

Because the process of re-esterification is a very expensive and time-consuming step, many manufacturers leave it with the ethyl ester. We take the step – because the advantages are all worth it:

  • Oil concentrates with a high triglyceride content have a 400% higher bioavailability than EE oil concentrates.

    What does that mean?
    A much larger proportion of the EPA and DHA contained in triglyceride fish oil concentrate is absorbed and used by the body.

  • Triglyceride fish oil concentrate oxidizes more slowly than EE fish oil!

    What does that mean?
    Oxidation means that a molecule breaks down chemically and becomes unusable in the case of food supplements. Various studies have shown that EE fish oil concentrates oxidize faster at any temperature than triglyceride fish oil concentrates. So they last longer than EE fish oil concentrates.

  • Triglyceride fish oil concentrates are significantly more efficient in lowering circulating blood triglyceride values than EE fish oil concentrates.

    What does that mean?
    Besides cholesterol, triglycerides are the most important blood lipids. Circulating triglyceride levels in the blood are therefore an important cardiovascular risk marker. Elevated triglycerides increase the risk of a heart attack. Too much alcohol, rapidly absorbable carbohydrates (such as table sugar) and a lot of dietary fat increase the triglyceride value.

Why linseed oil alone is not enough.

Linseed oil does contain the vegetable omega-3 fatty acid ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid), however, this has not the above described effects on your health. Your body can convert ALA to EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), which our body is able to synthesize to DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), but only in small quantities. The conversion rate from ALA to EPA and further to DHA fluctuates strongly from person to person and depends on different factors (age, gender, change of substance, etc.).

In the worst case, one assumes that less than 10% converts to EPA and only about 0.5% to DHA.

This means specifically: To receive just 362 mg of DHA, you would need to consume about 132 ml linseed oil, 330 g linseeds or take 1 super tasty jelly – the decision is easy, right?

Omega-3-fatty acids belong to the group of the polyunsaturated fatty acids. Because the body cannot produce them itself, we have to assimilate it through food.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are besides Alpha-Linolenic acid (ALA) two out of three omega-3-fatty acids. In comparison to ALA DHA and EPA are biologically particularly active.

WHICH FISH OIL DOES VABO-N OH!MEGA CONTAIN?

Our omega-3 product consists of a fish oil concentrate with 90% triglycerides. According to studies, omega-3 fatty acids are up to 400% more bioavailable in this natural form than in commercially available ethyl ester fish oil concentrates, which don’t contain triglycerides and are therefore poorly absorbed by the body. In addition, the omega-3 jellys are 44% more bioavailable compared to soft gel capsules.

Commonly available triglyceride oils usually have a triglyceride content of 50% – 60%. For VABO-N OH!MEGA we decided that we want more than that and finally reached a triglyceride content of 90%, which makes our omega-3 product much more bioavailable compared to the usual preparations! VABO-N OH!MEGA has thus taken on a global pioneering role in this area.

WHY DOES VABO-N OH!MEGA CONSIST OF FISH OIL CONCENTRATE?

VABO-N OH!MEGA uses fish oil concentrate because, unlike conventional fish oil, this is the only way to achieve the high concentration of 362 mg DHA and 148 mg EPA in one jelly.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE A FISH OIL CONCENTRATE WITH THE HIGHEST AMOUNT OF TRIGLYCERIDES?

In their natural shape, oils consist of triglycerides. In addition to the re-esterfied concentrate in the shape of triglyceride contained in VABO-N OH!MEGA, which is obtained by innovative methods of molecular distillation, there is also the conventional fish oil and the cheap, less bioavailable ethyl ester concentrate.

The step of re-esterification during the production of the oil concentrate of VABO-N OH!MEGA is more expensive and time-consuming than leaving it with ethyl ester concentrate, but it is worth it because:

1) Triglyceride fish oil concentrates are up to 400% more bioavailable than ethyl ester fish oil concentrates, meaning: a much larger proportion of the EPA and DHA contained in the triglyceride fish oil concentrate can be absorbed and used by the body.

2) Triglyceride fish oil concentrate oxidizes much more slowly than ethyl ester fish oil concentrates! What does that mean? This is because the unnatural chemical compound of ethyl ester must be decomposed in a different way. First, the enzymes must loosen the connections between ethanol & the fatty acids in the EE concentrate and then attach to glycerin to form triglycerides, which can then be better absorbed by the body.

WHERE IS THE FISH OIL FROM?

Our fish oil concentrate comes from small fish from different regions to avoid overfishing while guaranteeing sustainable and strictly regulated fishing – tested according to the strict standards of the Friend of the Sea certificate!

A total of 90% of the caught fish is from Peru. The other 10% are fished in other waters in the interests of sustainability.

Directly on the ship the traceable haul is processed under EU EC hygiene regulations to the raw material and cleaned from contaminants such as heavy metals. The good, meat-containing parts are used for VABO-N OH!MEGA, the remnants then go into further processing.

After the raw material has been extracted, the fish oil is shipped for further processing and is being processed into the end product – VABO-N OH!MEGA.

WHY IS VABO-N OH!MEGA NOT VEGAN AND ISN’T OBTAINED FROM SEAWEED?

VABO-N OH!MEGA is not obtained from seaweed oil because the high concentration of 362 m DHA and 148 mg EPA, which our product offers, could not be reached. Seaweed oil also contains very little or no EPA. Another factor why we decided against a seaweed oil product is the very intense taste of seaweed, which would have led to a problem during production and the product would have been a lot more expensive.

Triglycerides are a type of fat found in the blood. After eating something, the body converts the calories that are not needed into triglycerides and stores them in the fat cells as an energy deposit. However, too many triglycerides in the blood can increase the risk of heart diseases.

Omega-3 fatty acids, which are provided to the body in the form of triglycerides, help the body to lower blood lipid levels by reducing the production of lipoproteins in the liver and helping to remove them from the blood more quickly. This process lowers blood lipid levels, reduces inflammation in the blood vessels and prevents cardiovascular diseases.

In the case of omega-3 oils, triglyceride is only the shape of the fatty acid molecules so EPA and DHA are better absorbed by the body and the following applies – the higher the bioavailability, the better and faster the body will accept omega-3.

WHAT ARE OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS?

Omega-3 fatty acids are among the essential fatty acids in the group of polyunsaturated fatty acids. This means that the body cannot produce omega-3 itself and therefore it is necessary that it absorbs the fatty acids through food.

Omega-3 is the general name of a group of different fatty acids, including EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). Studies show that the two omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA have been proven to have health effects. However, EPA and DHA are mainly found in high-fat fish and seaweed oil, whereas ALA is found in some plant-based foods such as linseed oil, linseed or wild rice.

WHY ARE OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS IMPORTANT?

Omega-3 fatty acids have numerous health-promoting effects on the body, such as supporting heart and brain function and eyesight, they help maintain normal blood pressure and contribute to normal blood lipid levels. They also support the normal development of the eyes and brain of the fetus and the breastfed infant during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

At first glance, vegetable oils, nuts & seeds have high ALA values, but DHA and EPA are the two omega-3 fatty acids that are most useful to our body. Our body can convert ALA into EPA and this in turn into DHA but does so only to a very small extent. The conversion rate from ALA to EPA and DHA varies greatly from person to person and depends on various influencing factors (age, gender, metabolism, etc.). In the worst case, one assumes that less than 10% converts to EPA and only approx. 0.5% to DHA. Since most vegetable oils are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, large amounts are consumed. This blocks the conversion of alpha-linolenic acid to the more biologically active EPA. That is why the mentioned omega-3-rich vegetable oils are not a reliable source for an adequate supply of biologically active omega-3 fatty acids, but rather are supplements made of fish.

From this you can see that you would have to eat these foods in large quantities every day in order to adequately meet your daily omega-3 requirements.

Omega-3 is the general name of a group of different fatty acids. Studies show that EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) & DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) have been shown to have the most positive health effects.

Around 30% of the structural fats in the brain consist of DHA. That is why DHA is so important for brain activity and thinking, learning ability and reaction time as well as many other neurological processes that influence mental performance.

DHA is also an important component of the retina and supports, among other things, the ability to see light and dark. So it is obvious how important an adequate supply of docosahexaenoic acid is for your eyesight.

EPA is particularly important because it supports the heart function, regulates blood pressure and contributes to normal blood lipid levels.

Overall, docosahexaenoic acid is said to have several health effects than eicosapentaenoic acid, which is why VABO-N OH!MEGA contains more than twice as much DHA as EPA.

HOW MANY OMEGA-3/OMEGA-6 FATTY ACIDS DOES A HUMAN NEED?

Not only the amount of omega-3 that we eat every day, but above all the right ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is important to our health – because only with the right ratio of both fatty acids can their effect on the body be ensured.

The omega-6 fatty acids in the body act as components of the cell membranes and are required for growth and repair processes and promote the development of inflammation as part of the immune system. This can be particularly helpful for infections, because the development of inflammation can help to ward off dangerous pathogens. Another effect of omega-6 fatty acids is an increased tendency to clot the blood and a narrowing of the vessels. This is particularly advantageous in case of severe injuries. Because the faster the vessels constrict and the faster the platelets clump, the less blood the body loses.

Omega-6 fatty acids are thus the natural antagonist to the omega-3 fatty acids, which inhibits inflammatory processes, dilate the blood vessels and reduce the thick fluid of the blood so that it can slide better through the blood vessels and does not start clumping in the blood vessels. A balanced ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the body is therefore very  important to our health.

However, the industrialization of food increased the proportion of omega-6 fatty acids on our daily menu. As both fatty acids share the same metabolic processes, a rising imbalance in the intake between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids was the result.

Instead of the ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 of 3:1, the actual intake of Europeans today is on average at 12:1.
